The Riviera dei Fiori – a feast for all the senses
Fascinating coastal towns overlooking the sea and ancient mountain villages nestled among olive groves with incomparable panoramic views create a unique backdrop. In addition, you can expect valuable artistic and cultural treasures, culinary delights to melt in your mouth and a mild climate that provides the perfect conditions for almost any kind of leisure activity – all of which can only be found here!
Discover the Flower Riviera – concentrated diversity within easy reach
The Ponente region in western Liguria is a true paradise for lovers of culture, sights, countryside, and people. Located between Genoa and Ventimiglia on the French border, it combines Mediterranean flair with excellent accessibility. The short distances to the nearest airports are particularly convenient: Nice Airport can be reached in less than an hour, as can Genoa or Riviera Airport in Albenga. However, you can also travel by car or train.
The proximity to well-known places with famous sights makes the region worth experiencing. Bordighera, the elegant neighboring town of Ventimiglia, and Sanremo with its casino and palm-lined promenade are centrally located and easily accessible. Just a few kilometers away in the direction of France is Monaco with the legendary Monte Carlo – ideal for a spontaneous day trip.
The Riviera of Flowers – Pure bliss for body and soul
The diversity and quality of life dating back to ancient cultural heritage on the Riviera of Flowers is unique. Coastal seaside resorts lure you with their charm and the towns invite to go shopping and absorb the elegance and splendor of gone by days.
The snow-capped Maritime Alps form the dramatic backdrop to the picturesque Ligurian hinterland. The rolling vineyards and olive groves, the breathtaking gorges, romantic hamlets and villages are simply balm for the soul. Four distinct cultures in close proximity, namely the Italian Riviera of Flowers, the Ligurian hinterland, the elegant Côte d’Azur and the Eastern Province create an unrivaled quality of life

Liguria’s mild climate – a winter place of refuge for the Russian Aristocracy
Some 60 days of rain per year and mild temperatures all through the winter – it comes as no surprise that the Russian aristocracy followed the Grand Duchesse Maria Alexandrowa who resided on the Riviera in the mid last century. The mild climate is the result of a unique geographical situation as the Riviera of flowers is protected from wind to the north and east by high mountain ranges.
The long stretched valleys allow for the mild and pleasant Mediterrannean climate to flourish. The weather is actually better than in the neighbouring regions Piemont, Emilia-Romagna and Toscana. The nearest climate zone of similar qualities in Italy can only be found some hundreds of kilometers further south in the gulf of Naples. Temperatures on the coast rarely sink below freezing and the winter months are usually very sunny. And during the summer, it does not feel as sweltering as further land inwards.

Liguria – Mediterranean cuisine at its best
You will find the best of everything, which is why the local cuisine is so outstanding. The basil grown in Liguria is known to be the best in the world and Ligurian olive oil (the “Taggiasca” variety) tops the list of the world’s best olive oils. Both ingredients are vital when making the famous pesto sauce. The scent of basil, majoram, lemon balm, sage and rosemary fills the air and your taste buds will sense the close proximity to the Provence.
On the coast stretching from Albenga to Monte Carlo as well as the villages in the hinterland you will find a vast number of excellent restaurants of all price categories. Crunchy vegetables accompanied by the freshest of fish feature prominently on the menus and plenty of local and regional dishes only to be found in this area. Why not try “Coniglio in umido” – rabbit cooked in white wine and olive oil; “Mesciu” made with white beans and chickpeas, “Farinata” flat bread baked with pepper, rosemary and onions. There are plenty more local specialities such as “Pansoti”, “Trofie”, “Friscieu”, “Focaccia” as well as sardines, anchovies, mackerels and shellfish freshly caught in the Gulf of Liguria. And to compliment the local food there are wines to be enjoyed from Cinqueterre or the lively Vermentino, Pigato, Sciacchetre or the balanced red grape “Rossese di Dolceacqua”.

Swimming, Hiking and Sports without limits
Liguria has one of the cleanest coasts and best water qualities in Italy and the there is plenty of beach life to be enjoyed on the sandy beaches of Alassio or Diano Marina, in Bordighera with views over the Côte d’Azur or in many of the little coves dotted along the 350 km coastline. Natural rock basins invite for a cooling dip in one of the many gushing mountain rivers. The entire coastline offers plenty of opportunities for everybody who likes to relax or get sporty: swimming, sailing, surfing, diving.
And there is more. Cycling, mountain biking, hiking and horse back riding will take you into some of the most famous hiking resorts in Italy and leave you with ever lasting memories. There are the golf courses of Sanremo, Garlenda and Castellaro and more extreme sports such as bungee jumping, free-climbing or paragliding. Or canyoning in the gorges of the Maritime Alps and skiing in the alpine resort of Limone or Monès or in the Ligurian resort of Avetotal. For the adventurer in you there is deep sea diving for ancient shipwrecks in Zoagli. To enjoy a more scenic experience you may want to join one of the Whalewatching boats leaving from Sanremo or Imperia.

Sights, cultural monuments and events for over 2000 years
Liguria is one of the oldest settlements in Europe and remains from the past can be found everywhere, in Dolceacqua with the ruined Doria Castle and medieval bridge once famously painted by Monet, Ventimiglia with its Roman theatre dating back to the 2ndcentury, the San Michele church from 1100, the Benedict Monastry S. Fruttuoso in Camogli, the rock grottos in Troiano, the San Paolo Fort from the 13thcentury or the archeological museum and the spires of historically important Albenga.
The summer is one big celebration. Village Fêtes with dance on the piazza, music festivals, some featuring high profile artists in Cervo, world class fireworks in Dolceacqua, the song festival in Sanremo. The glamorous Sporting Club in Monaco where the stars can be seen mingling and for friends of the opera, there is the Opera Monte Carlo. The festival of ancient music in Ventimiglia, international chamber music festival in Cervo, classical concerts and contemporary theatre in Apricale and Dolceacqua, Sebastians Celebrations and processions.

Shopping – from rustic to extremely exclusive
In Sanremo, the folkloric weekly market occupies Piazza Eroi Sanremesi and extends far into the adjacent alleys. The colourful markets in Bordighera, Diano Marino and many other Ligurian towns are similarly exuberant. In Genoa, the oriental market ‘Mercato Orientale’ attracts visitors. However, Ventimiglia has the largest street market in Italy. A real event. With everything your heart desires. Including counterfeit goods from well-known companies, offered by street vendors until the police arrive. Of course, reputable traders dominate. Many with beautiful goods and excellent Ligurian specialities, e.g. pickled olives and tomatoes. Some of the vegetables, meat and fish come directly from farmers and fishermen. If you are looking for something special, you will find it at the antique flea markets in Alassio, Diano Marina and Nice, as well as in the junk shops in Genoa’s old town streets. Genoa’s old town is wicked, but that’s exactly why it’s worth a shopping and exploring trip. A fashion shopping spree in Sanremo on the elegant Corso Matteotti, in Genoa on Via Roma and Via XX Settembre, or in the evening in Alassio, where good fashion is available at fair prices, is particularly enjoyable and full of flair. The nearby towns of the so-called ‘big world’ offer the ultimate in luxury: Monte Carlo, Nice, Cannes.

Luscious vegetation on Italy’s sun drenched terraces
Olive groves and orange orchards, fragrant meadows, vineyards and dramatic rock gorges – that is the quintessentially Ligurian landscape. It is the greenest and most densely wooded region in Italy, known to have a broader diversity of species than anywhere else in Europe. Thanks to the mild climate, flowers of all colours please the eye from early spring to late summer. Hence the well deserved name ‘Riviera of Flowers’.
The Mediterranean Macchia is overgrowing with palm trees, lemon and orange orchards, bougainvillea, oleander, hibiscus, red gillyflowers, bluebells, agave, wild lavender, thyme and local species only to be found in this region. The rolling hills come to life with the soft colours of green olive groves, vineyards, broom shrubs, daffodils, orchards, pine trees, oak trees, eucalyptus, field gentian and lilies of the valley.
